Advancing cross-border carbon solutions

As part of the program of the Belgian Royal mission to Norway last week, Ilse KENIS, our Chief Carbon Officer joined the delegations' visit to Northern Lights.

Bringing together policymakers and industry leaders from Belgium and Norway, the event focused on advancing a cross-border CO₂ value chain and accelerating Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) solutions.

During the panel discussion, key stakeholders, from policy and emitters to transport and storage, explored how to overcome current bottlenecks and unlock scalable, secure CCS deployment. The key take-aways for and from Carmeuse are the following:

• Importance of creating lead markets supporting financing of sustainable products
• Criticality of affordable energy and CO2 infrastructure - which should be seen as a strategic importance to keep the industry long term
• The accelerating role of collaboration between public and private actors, across country boarders
• The inspirational learnings from Norway's approach and leading experience in CCS

The visit also included a tour of the Northern Lights CO₂ storage facility and the Kollsnes Gas Processing Plant, offering valuable insights into operational best practices and real-world implementation.
