Landfill Operations Update: Hazardous Waste, Tire Recycling, and More

The Newton Sanitary Landfill has opened its Hazardous Household Waste Satellite Center for the season. Staff recently completed an 8-hour safety refresher training to ensure proper handling of materials like batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and pesticides. Customers can call ahead or stop at the scale house for assistance with waste drop-off. The landfill has also made a cost-saving change in tire recycling with a smaller tire cage, eliminating a $160 monthly rental fee. Meanwhile, the "Grizzly Grate" system helps efficiently manage brush processing, and summer hours began on April 1st, operating Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:15 pm, and Saturdays, 8:00 am to 11:45 am. For the third quarter of FY 2024-2025, the landfill processed 5,705.28 tons of waste and diverted over 100 tons of materials for recycling.
