WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter (OR-03), Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, demanded accountability from the Department of the Interior following the resignation of Crater Lake National Park Superintendent Kevin Heatley.Heatley's departure, prompted by dangerous staffing cuts and Trump's blatant disregard for our public lands, raises urgent concerns about the future of one of Oregon's most cherished places, just as families prepare for summer visits.
"Camping was one of the few trips my family could afford while growing up. But what these experiences offered was priceless: awe, adventure, and connection. Every single Oregonian should have the opportunity to do the same with their families at treasured places like Crater Lake," said Congresswoman Dexter. "Yet, Trump is driving out the public servants who protect our public lands. When a dedicated public servant resigns because their team is being pushed past the brink, it is a flashing red warning sign that something is very wrong."
"I'm acting in my capacity as the Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations to demand answers and action from the Department of the Interior. I will use every tool at my disposal to ensure Crater Lake gets the staffing, support, and stewardship Oregonians deserve."
In her letter, Dexter demands the Department of the Interior provide urgent answers to the following questions:
Crater Lake National Park brings in tens of millions annually to Oregon's economy and draws approximately half a million visitors each year.
