Commonwealth Fusion Systems Announces Equity Investment by Hyundai Motor Group

DEVENS, Mass. (Sept. 10, 2026) - Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), the global leader in fusion energy, today announced that Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) became an investor during the company's recent $1 billion fundraise. The investment marks the first step in a partnership between the companies as they explore avenues of collaboration on future ARC power plants.

"As we prepare to put fusion energy on the grid in the early 2030s, we see partnerships with leading industrial and energy companies like Hyundai as an important component to helping us scale our ARC power plant business," said Bob Mumgaard, CEO and Co-founder of CFS. "We look forward to exploring collaboration opportunities with Hyundai given their expertise and track record of building power plants in Korea and around the world."

Hyundai's investment in CFS demonstrates the broadening diversity and maturity of CFS' investor base, and it reflects Hyundai's confidence in the concrete progress CFS has made in the assembly of its SPARC fusion demonstration machine and parallel development of its first ARC power plant in Virginia. Hyundai joins a growing number of investors in the Asia-Pacific region that support CFS' leadership role in commercializing fusion energy, including Woori Venture Partners in Korea; a consortium of Japanese industrial companies led by MITSUI & CO., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Corporation; Temasek of Singapore; and Hostplus Superannuation Fund in Australia.

The investment also reflects the companies' shared commitment to advance transformative energy technologies to support growing global energy demand. Hyundai and CFS will explore actions to support fusion energy in Korea, consistent with Korea's prioritization of fusion under the 7 SEED initiative to advance major new technologies.

"Fusion energy has the potential to play an important role in addressing growing global energy demand while supporting a more sustainable future," said Hokeun Chung, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor Group. "CFS has demonstrated strong technical progress toward commercial fusion energy, and we look forward to exploring opportunities to contribute our industrial, engineering and infrastructure expertise as the industry advances."

The $1 billion capital raise was the single largest funding round among fusion energy companies worldwide since CFS announced its $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021. To date, CFS has raised $4 billion, representing about 30% of the total capital raised by the fusion industry and reinforcing CFS' position as the world's largest and leading fusion company.

CFS is focused on completing the assembly of its SPARC fusion demonstration machine in Devens, Massachusetts, and also continues to move forward with development of the world's first grid-scale ARC fusion power plant at the company's Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Having become the first fusion company to submit an application to PJM Interconnection, the largest wholesale electricity market in the United States, CFS is on track to put power on the grid in the early 2030s, bolstered by strategic partnerships with Dominion Energy as well as Google and Eni, two investors in CFS that also signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) to buy more than half the power the plant will produce.
