Amsterdam, NL (Aug 13, 2025) - SAE Group Europe is proud to play a leading role in a new European Union-funded research initiative - Hybrid Intelligence for Advanced Collective Perception and Decision Making in Complex Urban Environments (HIDDEN). This Horizon Europe project aims to improve safety in cities by enabling automated vehicles to better detect at-risk road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and road workers, particularly in situations where visibility is obstructed.
By combining hybrid intelligence of human and machine reasoning with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, the project seeks to improve automated vehicle perception and decision-making in complex urban environments.
SAE Group Europe, the European affiliate of SAE International, through SAE's global mobility network, is leading the project's standardization work and collaboration with international standards organizations, regulatory bodies, and policy stakeholders to help ensure that HIDDEN's outcomes are globally relevant and scalable.
"SAE Europe and its community is honored to lead the HIDDEN project effort to cooperate with European and international standardisation organizations, EU-type approval authorities and other stakeholders," says John Tintinalli, General Manager, SAE Europe. "This project has significant scope and implications, making harmonization one of the pillars for its success."
"HIDDEN goes beyond conventional AI," said Dr. Angelos Amditis, HIDDEN Coordinator and R&D Director, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). "We're bringing human judgement into the loop - so automated systems can act not just accurately, but wisely. By blending the precision of machines with human context, awareness, and ethics, we aim to make urban transport not only smarter but also safer and more socially attuned."
The HIDDEN consortium includes leading European research institutions, AI-focused SMEs, global automotive companies, certification authorities, social science researchers. SAE International intends to bring decades of expertise in standards development, mobility innovation, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to help translate project outcomes into practical, trusted solutions for the future of urban mobility.
