Akron, Ohio, Jan. 22, 2025 - Today, Mayor Malik is announcing that the City of Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W Crosier St.) on Thursday Jan. 23 and Friday Jan. 24 from 8:00am to 7:00pm to provide a warming center for residents in need. The warming center has been open a total of 13 days so far this year including today and will be open a total of 15 days after this week. All other City of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours.
The city will continue to monitor temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary. Unless otherwise specified, the center will return to normal business hours starting Saturday, January 25.
The Emergency Overnight Shelter located at 111 East Voris St. will be open tonight through Friday Jan. 24. The shelter operates between 7pm and 8am.
The shelter is in need of winter gloves, hand warmers, and volunteers. Any donations are appreciated and can be delivered to the Peter Maurin Center at 1096 S. Main St. Akron, OH on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10am-12:45pm and on Sundays between 11am-1:45pm. You can also sign up to volunteer or donate on the site here .
