Day 5 of the Schumer Shutdown

This week, the federal government shut down because Senate Democrats, including Arizona Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, voted repeatedly to block a funding bill, known as a continuing resolution (or CR) that would have kept the government open.

How did we get here? Congress must pass annual appropriations measures to fund federal government agencies each fiscal year, which begins October 1. On September 19, 2025, I supported a measure that passed the House of Representatives extending current federal funding until November 21, 2025. This was a clean, straightforward extension of existing funding without extraneous policies.

Unfortunately, Senate Democrats rejected the continuing resolution, choosing instead to shut down the government. This means that many federal agencies do not currently have the authority to operate. Remember: Senate rules require 60 votes to pass a measure; Republicans hold 53 seats.

Republicans in Congress are committed to keeping the government OPEN. In fact, by passing a clean continuing resolution on Sept. 19, the House of Representatives did its job. Republicans in Congress and President Trump support a clean funding extension -without any partisan policies-to November 21st to keep the government OPEN and allow the full-year appropriations process to move forward.

Keep in mind that under the Biden Administration, Republicans worked with Democrats to pass a clean CR, just like we are asking for now, 13 times. By keeping the government open, we are ensuring stability for seniors, veterans, our troops and families across the country.

Why are Democrats keeping the government shutdown? Because they are insisting that their radical $1.5 trillion wish list of demands be added to the clean funding bill, including cuts to rural health care, spending YOUR money to fund healthcare for illegals, prop up leftist media outlets with YOUR money, and back climate schemes in foreign countries. Don't believe me? Even Democrats are now saying the quiet part out loud and admitting they shut the government down until illegals get free healthcare. In fact, Representative Maxine Waters said this week that Democrats are demanding healthcare for everybody, including illegals. While Representative Ro Khanna admitted that the amount of money actually going towards people who are illegalis a small portion of the Medicaid. Still don't believe, click here to watch this very thorough explanation of why the Democrats have in fact shut the government down because they insist illegals use YOUR money for free healthcare. Or, if you are more of a visual person, you can also check out this helpful chart. But wait, there's more evidence for all you doubters. I have the receipts right here: the clarity of Democrats' desire to give illegal immigrants free healthcare is abundant, as evidenced by every single Democratic nominee eagerly raising their hand in support of the policy at the June 2019 NBC presidential debate. Translation: Democrats want to force Americans to pay for illegal aliens' health insurance.

What's the Schumer Shutdown costing?More than 1.9 million civilian employees risk delayed paychecks. 1.3 million active-duty troops will miss pay after October 1st and over 100,000 federal law enforcement officers will work without pay. WIC will run out of money for nearly seven million women and children in October. In fact, each week, a shutdown costs around $15 billion in U.S. GDP and a month-long shutdown would mean 43,000 more unemployed Americans.

What were the results of the poll you conducted? Earlier this week, I conducted a snap poll asking constituents if they supported the Schumer Shutdown. The results are in. More than 2,200 people responded and 92% indicated they do NOT support the shutdown, 6% support it and 2% were undecided. Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond.

The bottom line is that the contrast could not be clearer: Republicans want to keep the government open; Radical Left Democrats want to hold the government hostage to appease left-wing activists.

My website has information about this if you want more detail-- see my "Government Shutdown" page and note that I will continue to assist AZ-09 residents with federal agency issues.

Border Wall Construction Resumes in Arizona

As Trump promised, construction has resumed on new segments of the border wall in Arizona's San Rafael Valley in Santa Cruz County. This is part of our efforts in Congress to stop the massive influx of criminals and illegal aliens that the Biden Administration welcomed in. Biden deliberately halted work on the wall and then sold the border wall fencing for scrap metal to allow criminals to invade our country and register as Democrats. President Trump campaigned on reversing this attack on our sovereignty and is fulfilling his promise to secure the border. It is long overdue for the federal government to prioritize the protection of American lives and communities instead of creating chaos and crime in our cities.

Let's not forget what's at issue: Biden's unsecured borders allowed fentanyl and other drugs to pour into our country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans in the last five years. The Federation for American Immigration Reform reported that illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers more than $116 billion annually.

In addition to drugs pouring in, illegal aliens have caused violent crime, including murder, rape and death caused by drunk driving. These costs, and the loss of life, are preventable if our borders are sealed.

The leftists are, of course, against our safety. They now claim there is a salamander that might not be able to wander across the border if the wall is built. The radical leftists are also worried about mountain lions, javelinas, wild pigs, skunks, badgers, and coyotes, but the lives of Americans: they can go to hell. I will choose safety for our people over the convenience of a salamander or skunk any day. If the leftists truly cared about the salamanders near the border they should not have opened the floodgates of 20 million illegal aliens in four years that spread chaos and crime across our country.

The resumption of the border wall construction is a key indicator that my work in Congress and my work with the Trump Administration is paying off. This is more proof that we now have a government in the Trump Administration that cares about its own people.

Camp Mohave Elementary was honored as America's Best Schools

Earlier this week, the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) honored Camp Mohave Elementary School in Fort Mohave as one of only eleven out of 3,000 schools nationwide as America's best schools. This award is one of the most selective recognitions in public education in the nation and it reflects the outstanding work happening at Camp Mohave. According to Camp Mohave, this award is unique. It is not about test scores alone. It celebrates schools where equity and excellence go hand in hand, where all students thrive. It honors schools that sustain strong attendance, foster a positive climate, and ensure that students experience engaging and innovative learning every day. Congratulations to Camp Mohave and Principal Cottrell for this incredible achievement!
