The following data is derived from trading activity on the Tradeweb Markets institutional European- and U.S.-listed ETF platforms.
Total traded volume
Trading activity on the Tradeweb European ETF marketplace amounted to EUR 62.7 billion in December, the platform's second best-performing month in 2024. The proportion of transactions executed via Tradeweb's Automated Intelligent Execution (AiEX) reached an all-time record of 91.8%, while the percentage of AiEX volume registered at 24%.
Adam Gould, Global Head of Equities at Tradeweb, said: "Our European ETF platform had a strong end to the year, with quarterly total traded volume surpassing EUR 185 billion, the second-highest performance on record and an increase of 13.8% compared to the same period last year. Once again, automated transactions were at an all-time high during December.
Volume breakdown
Equity, fixed income and commodity-based ETFs all saw net buying in December, with 'buys' exceeding 'sells' by four, eight and 14 percentage points, respectively.
North America Equities was once again the most heavily-traded ETF category, with over EUR 20 billion traded over the month, more than double that of Global Equities.

Total consolidated U.S. ETF notional value traded in December reached USD 64 billion.
Adam Gould, Global Head of Equities at Tradeweb, said: "December was another busy trading month despite the holiday slowdown in the second half of December. In the U.S., Tradeweb institutional ETF volumes grew by 8.5% year-over-year, and we saw the highest percentage of automated trades for the year. Q4 2024 registered as the third best performing quarter on record, with volume amounting to USD 186.9 billion."

As a percentage of total notional value, equities accounted for 54% and fixed income for 39%, with the remainder comprising commodity and specialty ETFs.
Top ten by traded notional volume
Nine of December's ten most actively-traded ETFs in the U.S. were fixed income products. The iShares Broad USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF moved up from third place in November to take this month's top spot. The iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF registered in second, while the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF came in third.
