ECUA to Perform Emergency Sewer Repair at North 9th Avenue and East Salamanca Street June 1

The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority announces that emergency gravity sewer repair work will begin Monday, June 1, at the intersection of North 9th Avenue and East Salamanca Street in Pensacola.

The emergency repair and associated road closure are expected to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, June 1, and continue through 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, weather and field conditions permitting.

The repair is related to a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred on Sunday, May 10, near 1605 E. Heinberg St. ECUA's investigation determined that the overflow was caused by a blockage in an 18-inch gravity sewer main near the intersection of North 9th Avenue and East Salamanca Street, approximately 4,200 feet from where the overflow occurred.

Following the incident, ECUA conducted a closed-circuit television inspection of the affected sewer line. The inspection revealed that the 18-inch gravity sewer main transitions to a 12-inch pipe approximately 14 feet from a manhole beneath the intersection. Asphalt debris accumulated at the reduction point, creating a blockage.

Due to the size and depth of the sewer infrastructure, as well as the proximity to Pensacola Bay, Talcon Group, ECUA's emergency contractor, has been contracted to complete the repair work.

The emergency repair project will include:

Installation of a temporary sewer bypass system

Dewatering operations within the roadway

Removal of asphalt debris from the gravity sewer main

Replacement of approximately 14 feet of 12-inch gravity sewer main with an 18-inch gravity sewer main to reduce the risk of future blockages and sewer overflows

Native Road Safety will implement temporary traffic control measures during construction activities.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes during the repair period. ECUA appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as crews complete this necessary emergency infrastructure repair.
