PRESS STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER HON. FIAME NAOMI MATA'AFA AFTER THE GENERAL ELECTION 2025 [9th September 2025]

Good afternoon Samoa; following the conclusion of the general elections' official count on Friday last week, and subsequent conveyance of the writ to the Head of State, I now take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you, for your patience and active participation in the electoral process.

Your voices, through your votes, have once again demonstrated the strength and resilience of our democracy.

We thank the Lord for his love and grace upon us, and for his peace on our country as we took part in this important democratic process. In this regard, I acknowledge with gratitude the role of the church and prayer warriors for committing this occasion to the Lord, and for praying for peace in the country.

I take this opportunity to congratulate the winning political party - Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi, and its leader - Laaulialemalietoa who will now steer our country into the future. I also acknowledge the leader of the Human Rights Protection Party -Tuilaepa and all other political parties' leaders for their contribution to ensuring a peaceful and robust general elections.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the voters, who turned out to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Your voices matter, and the choices you made in electing your representatives in Parliament over the next five years, will hopefully deliver to your expectations for a better Samoa.

A special thank you to the Electoral Commissioner and his dedicated team of officials for their tireless efforts in ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. Your commitment to upholding the integrity of our democracy in every way possible deserves our recognition.

To the electoral officials, police and all observers who participated in the elections, thank you all. Your roles were imperative to safeguarding the electoral process, and maintaining order during this significant time of our country's history. May you make good on any lessons learnt from the conduct of the elections.

As my Government prepares to complete our Cabinet duties, I want to thank you Samoa for standing together with the government, in driving what was carefully planned to enhance sustainable development and well-being. As Prime Minister, I have wholeheartedly committed to lead government in accordance with requirements of the law and policies, governing operations in a fair and equitable manner.

At the regional and international arenas, I have ensured that our voice as an independent country, was amplified with the collective voice of the Blue Pacific family on issues crucial for regional unity and solidarity to promote our priorities. That resonated with the feedback from the leaders around the globe on our consistent advocacy of our climate goals and stewardship of our ocean and protection of our biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. Our collective efforts in successfully hosting the signing of the SAMOA agreement in November 2023 and the Commonwealth Leaders meeting in October 2024 have placed us on a platform as a sought after host for international meetings and a viable tourist destination.

Our successes would not have happened without public support and trust in the systems of government. Our unity as a nation that is founded on God and respect for our cultural values, have shielded us from the torrents of time, and challenges of our democracy. Together we have weathered the rampage of COVID 19 and recently the dengue epidemic with the help of our development partners. What we have jointly accomplished in my term as Prime Minister, shall be made for the glory of the God upon whom this country is founded.

I congratulate the Prime Minister elect - Hon. Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi. I pray for wisdom and courage upon you to carry the mantle of leadership with dedication and integrity. I want to acknowledge with sincere appreciation my Cabinet colleagues who have served with me during the XVII Parliamentary Term. Thank you for your service to the country.

In closing, I acknowledge with appreciation the support of my Constituency - Lotofaga. We have come a long way and stood together over these many years. Thank you for your prayers, your counsel and ready support during the 40 years I have been your Member of Parliament and your continued support for the next 5 years.

The Head of State has proclaimed next Tuesday, 16th September for the convening of the XVIII Parliament. Let us all move forward to meet this new chapter in our country's political journey with faith, steadfast and thankful hearts.

May God bless Samoa

Soifua.
