Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on Senate Republicans blocking a bipartisan amendment process to improve the Laken Riley Act:
"The murder of Laken Riley was horrific, and my prayers are with her family and loved ones. I have always supported immigration policies that are tough, fair, and keep New Mexicans safe. It's why I voted for the bipartisan border security agreement last year that was ultimately blocked at the direction of then-candidate Donald Trump.
"This legislation, as it stands, would divert resources from serious threats, risk abuse by state attorneys general, endanger DACA holders, and cost American taxpayers billions of dollars. I am disappointed that Senate Republicans did not consider fair, common-sense amendments to improve this legislation, including the amendment I introduced with Senator Kaine to ensure that the resources of the federal government are dedicated to keeping truly dangerous individuals out of our communities.
"I remain committed to advancing policies that will keep our communities safe, and I hope that Senate Republicans will work with us to do so."
