A new framework for UCLA’s future

UCLA is facing a time of immense change and great opportunity. As higher education navigates shifting demographics, artificial intelligence, changing public expectations and growing financial pressures, the choices we make today will determine the strength and direction of our institution for generations to come.

To that end, Chancellor Julio Frenk today introduced "Renewal and Resilience: A Framework for UCLA's Future," guided by two essential premises. First, UCLA's mission - educating students, advancing research and creative activity, providing outstanding health care, and serving society - will never change, but the way we do things must evolve so that we can better fulfill that mission in a rapidly changing world. Second, the university must proactively and purposefully shape its future rather than sit back and wait to respond to pressures.

Importantly, UCLA approaches this work from a position of strength built on generations of excellence, the chancellor stressed, giving the university a firm foundation for the transformations ahead.

The new framework prioritizes streamlining and improving UCLA's operations; developing a sustainable budget model; creating new structures and programs to meet Bruins' evolving educational needs throughout their lives; building on the university's expanded footprint in Westwood and beyond to advance research and education; and modernizing UCLA Athletics to ensure that we remain competitive and aligned with the university's mission.

"Our responsibility is to preserve what is essential, transform what needs improvement and build for what lies ahead," Chancellor Frenk said. "The work of creating UCLA's future belongs to all of us, and I look forward to continuing this work together."
