More information on prescribed pile burn on San Rafael Hill

The San Rafael Fire Department is preparing to conduct a prescribed pile burn on San Rafael Hill as part of our ongoing vegetation management and wildfire mitigation efforts. This important work is one component of a broader strategy to reduce hazardous fuels in our open spaces and strengthen protection for the surrounding neighborhoods and communities adjacent to this area.

Over time, dead vegetation and accumulated brush increase wildfire risk and fire intensity. By conducting carefully planned and professionally managed pile burns, we can safely remove excess fuels under controlled conditions. This proactive approach helps reduce the likelihood of large, fast-moving wildfires and supports healthier, more resilient open space ecosystems.

Prescribed pile burning is planned between March 16 and April 1, weather permitting. All burn operations are dependent on favorable conditions, including appropriate humidity levels, wind speeds, and air quality considerations, to ensure safe and effective implementation. If conditions are not ideal, operations will be rescheduled to prioritize public safety and environmental responsibility. This project is funded through Measure C.
