UMGC and Michigan Community College Association Partner to Expand Access to Affordable Teacher Preparation Pathways

Adelphi, Md. (September 23, 2025) - University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), a national leader in workforce-relevant online education, and the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA), representing Michigan's 28 public community colleges and 3 tribal colleges, have announced a new partnership focused on expanding pathways to education and opening new doors to careers in education.

Through this agreement, eligible Michigan community college students, employees, and their families qualify for guaranteed admission, application fee waivers, and a 25% discount on out-of-state tuition when enrolling in UMGC's online bachelor's degree programs. The partnership is designed in part to help address Michigan's shortage of qualified teachers.

"Michigan has made bold investments to expand access to teacher preparation, and UMGC is proud to support that effort," said UMGC President Gregory W. Fowler, PhD. "This partnership reflects our shared commitment to removing barriers, accelerating pathways, and preparing more students to step into roles that address workforce needs and strengthen our communities."

UMGC offers fully online bachelor's degree and certificate programs in more than 65 in-demand fields. Students benefit from flexible scheduling, digital course materials-most available at no cost to the student-as well as personalized support from success coaches and online access to services.

The partnership aligns with Michigan's alternative route to teacher certification and builds on MCCA's efforts to strengthen Michigan's educator pipeline through innovative, affordable, and accessible pathways.

"Michigan's community and tribal colleges are tackling the state's workforce challenges, including the teacher shortage. This partnership with the University of Maryland Global Campus lets students earn their bachelor's degree while maximizing credit transfer and prior learning, building the next generation of educators," said Brandy Johnson, president of the Michigan Community College Association.
