CARY, NC - Diwali is a time to gather with family and friends, celebrate traditions, and enjoy the Festival of Lights. As celebrations get underway, Cary encourages residents to keep a few safety tips in mind to help make the holiday safe and enjoyable for everyone. This year, Diwali is Sunday, November 8, with the full five-day festival running from November 6-10.
For those planning to celebrate with fireworks, consider attending a professionally managed display when possible. If you're using fireworks at home, remember that North Carolina only allows certain types, including sparklers, smoke devices, party poppers, and some ground-based fountains. Fireworks that explode, spin, or fly into the air, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles, are not legal for personal use. Even fireworks that are legal in North Carolina are not permitted in public spaces, including Cary parks.
When using legal fireworks, always follow the manufacturer's instructions, keep water nearby to douse spent fireworks before disposing of them, and stay a safe distance away from homes, vehicles, and trees. Never allow children to handle fireworks and remember to be considerate of neighbors and pets.
Candles, tea lights, and diyas are also an important part of Diwali celebrations. Keep them on flat, stable surfaces away from decorations, curtains, and other flammable materials. Never leave an open flame unattended, and be sure to extinguish all flames before leaving the room or going to bed. If decorating with electrical lights, check for damaged wires or bulbs, and avoid overloading outlets or extension cords.
In the event of a fire, dial 911 for immediate threats to life and property. For everything else, contact Cary 311. For more, visit carync.gov/firesafety.
