WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, September 18, 2025, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) released the following statement after threats from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr forced the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show:
"As someone who has had the privilege of working at the FCC, I know how vital freedom of speech and a free press are to the foundation of our democracy. That's why it's so troubling to see the Trump Administration and FCC Chair Brendan Carr abusing their power to silence and censor anyone who disagrees with them.
The killing of Charlie Kirk was tragic, and we must also do everything possible to lower the temperature and engage in meaningful dialogue with those we disagree with. At a time of rising threats and division, we must recommit ourselves to civility, respect, and the free exchange of ideas - especially our freedom of speech - that make our democracy strong.
Carr's actions not only further divide us, they are against the law and undermine the very values on which our nation was built."
