MANTEO, N.C. - Cape Hatteras National Seashore will begin rehabilitation of the Bodie Island Light Station boardwalk and observation platform on Nov. 2 to improve the condition, accessibility and longevity of these popular visitor facilities. The boardwalk and observation platform will be closed for the duration of the approximately 120-day project, which is expected to be completed by this winter, weather permitting. The Bodie Island Light Station will remain open to visitors during construction.

This rehabilitation project will focus on repairs to the elevated ramp, observation platform and covered seating area. Work will include the removal and replacement of deteriorated boardwalk planks, metal cables and cable components, pile wraps and framed seating. Existing railings will be repaired and reinstalled, and fiberglass pilings will receive upgraded protective treatments designed to improve long-term resistance to weather and ultraviolet exposure.

Visitors should expect construction equipment, contractor personnel, temporary barriers and modified access routes in the vicinity of the project area throughout the construction period. The National Park Service appreciates the public's patience during construction as these improvements help preserve the boardwalk and observation platform for future visitors while enhancing overall visitor experience at Bodie Island Light Station.
