Today, we celebrate Democracy. Every day, the EU and the AU work together to protect it as a shared value and a joint commitment. It is yet another example that demonstrates the scope and depth of the AU-EU partnership that celebrates 25 years in 2025 (#AUEU25).

European Union Ambassador to the African Union, Javier Niño Pérez, underlines why it is relevant and how initiatives like AHEAD Africa are crucial in keeping democracy strong. Hear from him directly in the following video : HERE

AHEAD Africa is a pan-African project focusing on multiple facets of the electoral cycle across the continent. It aims to: (1) empower civil society, including citizen observers, to strengthen electoral systems and processes; and (2) contribute to higher levels of electoral integrity in African Union member states. The underlying methodology of the Action is the AHEAD approach - Action for a Holistic Electoral Approach for Democracy - which emphasises that follow-up to election observation recommendations can be a powerful driver for more inclusive electoral systems, building public trust, and preventing conflicts. By focusing on 'electoral follow-up,' civil society can effectively advocate for democratic accountability and play a significant role in fostering transparent and accountable electoral processes.
