CEF Energy: on the ground in the Baltics monitoring progress of synchronisation projects

Earlier this month, colleagues from CINEA travelled across Poland, Lithuania and Latvia to visit key infrastructure supporting the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity systems with the Continental European network, supported under the CEF Energy programme.

The mission included visits to several project sites, providing an opportunity to assess the progress and completion of works on the ground, exchange with beneficiaries and transmission system operators, and discuss next implementation steps for these strategic investments contributing to Europe's energy security.

Poland: reinforcing electricity connections

The first stop took place in Poland, where the team met with CEF beneficiary Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. and visited key infrastructure reinforcing electricity connections in the region, including 400 kV transmission lines and substations such as Piła Krzewina and Dunowo.

The visit also included a helicopter flight over the planned route of Harmony Link, the future electricity interconnector between Poland and Lithuania. Once completed, the project will enable electricity exchanges between the two countries and further strengthen the integration of the Baltic electricity systems with the Continental European network.

Lithuania: supporting system synchronisation

The mission then continued to Lithuania, where, hosted by the project beneficiary Litgrid , colleagues visited the Mūša substation and the Telšiai substation, including a synchronous condenser.

These facilities contribute to stabilising the electricity system and supporting the reliable synchronised operation of the Baltic States with the European network.

Latvia: enhancing grid stability

The final visits took place in Latvia, together with beneficiary Augstsprieguma tīkls AS , where the mission visited the Ventspils and Līksna synchronous condensers, as well as the Tume and Rēzekne battery energy storage systems.

These investments contribute to grid stabilisation, system frequency management and the development of a more efficient and resilient regional energy market.

Supporting regional energy security

Together, these investments supported under CEF Energy play a crucial role in strengthening regional energy security while advancing Europe's energy transition.

The mission also highlighted the value of visiting infrastructure projects on the ground, providing direct insight into implementation progress and helping ensure that EU funding continues to support strategic cross-border energy infrastructure across the region.
