DNC Secures Legal Victory in Utah, Breaking Down Barriers for Utahns with Disabilities to Register to Vote Arrow

As the RNC attempts to kick Americans off of the voting rolls, the DNC is defending the rights of voters across the country

Today, in a major victory for Utahns with disabilities, the state of Utah corrected a violation of Section 7 of the National Voter Registration Act and broke down barriers for people with disabilities to register to vote.

In December, the DNC sent a notice to Utah Lieutenant Governor Dierdre Henderson. Following discussions over the last few months between the DNC and the state of Utah, disability service offices on college campuses and transit service offices for people with disabilities will provide voter registration services in compliance with the NVRA. More than 20% of students at public colleges and universities have disabilities, and these students will now have the opportunity to register to vote while they're applying for disability services, reapplying, updating addresses, and more. Similarly, Utahns who utilize paratransit - a disability service in the state - will have an opportunity to register or update their voter registration when they apply for the paratransit, recertify, update addresses, and more.

This victory for Utahns with disabilities is the type of work the Department of Justice has traditionally done - bringing states into compliance with federal election laws - but with Trump's DOJ prioritizing a federal takeover of state elections, the DNC is stepping in to defend the rights of voters across the country. While Trump and the RNC are trying to kick Americans off the voting rolls, the DNC is ensuring that eligible Americans can take part in elections.

DNC Ken Martin released the following statement:

"Today's decision by the state of Utah is a win for Utahns with disabilities and for our democracy. Trump's Department of Justice is failing to do its duty to voters, so the DNC is stepping up to ensure states are complying with the law. As a result of these efforts, college students with disabilities will have an easier time registering to vote. We thank the state of Utah for correcting this longstanding violation of federal law. While Trump and the RNC try to kick Americans off of the voting rolls across the country, the DNC is standing up and fighting for voters everywhere."
