FedEx announces the deployment of 26 electric vehicles (EVs) to its operations in Puerto Rico, setting the pace for electric delivery adoption among logistics providers in the island. After retiring older units, these new EVs represent 19% of the company's vehicle fleet in this market.
The 26 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans will support parcel pickup and delivery services across key cities, including the San Juan metropolitan area, Hato Rey, Guaynabo, Bayamon, Ponce and Caguas. Collectively, the EVs are estimated to help avoid around 832 metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year and have an estimated range of up to 500 kilometers on a full charge. FedEx also has installed charging points at several of its locations to support the electric fleet.
"At FedEx, we are committed to building a smarter, more efficient network for our customers and communities," said Rolando Medina, director of operations for FedEx in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. "These 26 new electric vehicles will help reduce emissions on high-density urban routes while helping us maintain the speed and reliability our customers expect."
FedEx continues to assess opportunities to expand electric vehicle deployments across Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to Puerto Rico, the company also has deployed EVs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.
Globally, FedEx is working towards a goal of carbon neutral operations by 2040. As part of this effort, the company plans to transition its entire parcel pickup and delivery fleet to zero emission electric vehicles, with implementation occurring in phases aligned with manufacturing cycles, vehicle replacement schedules, and regional infrastructure development.
