The TriService Nursing Research Program (TSNRP), based at the Uniformed Services University (USU), recently announced the release of the digital edition of "Combat & Disaster Nursing: Evidence-Based Practice in Operational Environments." Available immediately as a downloadable PDF, the updated reference manual equips military nurses, medics, and disaster first responders with standardized clinical care recommendations designed specifically for constrained, austere, and far-forward deployment settings. The publication translates the latest peer-reviewed military medicine research into a highly portable format, ensuring that critical, life-saving guidance remains accessible in zero- or low-bandwidth environments where traditional communications and medical supply lines may be limited.

As the Department of War prepares medical forces for future conflicts characterized by prolonged field care and dispersed operations, the requirement for standardized, easily accessible clinical guidance has intensified. The transition from a heavy, physical textbook to a digital file allows the resource to fit onto a standard-issue tablet. This logistical shift ensures that frontline providers have immediate access to care recommendations whether they are operating aboard a naval vessel, in a subterranean bunker, or within a mobile triage unit during a natural disaster.

Translating Evidence to the Tactical Edge

The manual was edited by retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Col. (Dr.) Elizabeth Bridges, a military scientist, educator and critical care nurse who compiled the resource with input from a multidisciplinary team of military nurses and physicians. The core operational objective of the text provides research-based recommendations reflecting the reality of the battlefield to support military care providers to bring world-class nursing care to our warfighters.

"The book is unique as it is supported by a growing body of evidence regarding care provided by nurses under these unique conditions in contrast to in-garrison care," Bridges said. "Content ranges from blast trauma, traumatic brain injury and soft tissue trauma to operationally unique aspects of care such as infection control and pressure injury prevention."

By focusing on these unique operational care requirements, the manual provides a direct tactical advantage. For example, a military nurse caring for a casualty with a traumatic brain injury across the operational continuum of care can reference the digital manual to ensure secondary injury prevention protocols are strictly followed.

Moving Beyond Hospital-Centric Doctrine

Historically, some medical guidelines utilized in the field were adapted from civilian trauma centers, which operate under the assumption of continuous power, unlimited clean water, and immediate surgical backup. The 2026 TSNRP manual strips away those assumptions.

Air Force Col. Cubby Gardner, the executive director of TSNRP, emphasized that the collaborative development process was essential to creating a tool that actually functions in a combat zone rather than just in a sterile hospital ward. The operational deployment experiences of the authors also ensures the guidelines align with the physical limitations of austere medicine.

"This book integrates nurses' and physicians' perspectives with real-world deployment experience, moving beyond hospital-centric guidance to reflect austere care realities," Gardner said. "Unlike standard civilian nursing texts, these guidelines are grounded in operational constraints, resulting in practical and actionable recommendations for deployed settings."

This structural shift in clinical guidance means providers are trained to execute care using the equipment they actually carry, rather than the equipment they wish they had. The manual outlines alternative stabilization methods, austere infection control procedures, and decision-making matrices for when medical evacuation is delayed.

Force Development and Pipeline Integration

While the digital edition serves as an immediate tactical tool for military personnel currently deployed, its release also signals a strategic shift in how USU and the broader military medicine enterprise will educate and train the next generation of providers. The manual is designed to be deeply integrated into the accessions and educational pipelines.

By utilizing the text as a foundational document, nursing students and new accessions will baseline their clinical knowledge on operational realities from day one. This systemic educational integration ensures a uniform standard of care across all branches of the military.

"Embedded in training pipelines through case-based learning, simulation exercises, and pre-deployment preparation, it ensures the next generation of military nurses develop clinical competence and adaptability for austere environments," Gardner said.

This digital-first approach also allows for rapid distribution of future updates. As new clinical trials conclude or as after-action reports from recent humanitarian missions identify new systemic gaps, TSNRP can push updated PDF versions to the force much faster than reprinting physical volumes.

"It provides standardized evidence-based nursing care recommendations for the operational environment," Bridges said. "The content supports the core operational nursing competencies for all services."

Deployment and Access

The digital edition of "Combat & Disaster Nursing: Evidence-Based Practice in Operational Environments" is currently available for complimentary download to all military medical personnel. The file is optimized for offline use on standard tablets, phones, and ruggedized field computers. Providers, educators, and nursing students can access the download portal directly through the TriService Nursing Research Program at triservicenurse.org/combat-and-disaster-nursing.
