City observes Red Dress Day to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives

May 5, 2026

Today, the City of Edmonton observes Red Dress Day to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) and recognize the ongoing impacts on families, loved ones and communities.

Observed across Canada each year, Red Dress Day is a time for remembrance, reflection and awareness. Red dresses displayed in public and private spaces serve as powerful symbols of those who are missing and the grief carried by families and survivors.

This observance is deeply connected to the land we share, including Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) on Treaty 6 territory and the traditional homeland of the Métis. The City recognizes that the MMIR crisis is linked to the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic inequities.

The City continues to advance its work related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives through the
Indigenous Framework and the MMIR Action Plan, working in partnership with Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations. This includes supporting community-led initiatives, advancing actions that respond to the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The City also contributes to coordinated efforts that address safety, prevention and systemic barriers through sustained partnerships, advocacy and collective action.

We encourage all Edmontonians to take time today to listen to Indigenous voices, learn about the history and ongoing impacts of MMIR and show support in meaningful ways, including participating in local events and community-led initiatives.
