A three-block stretch of Bryn Mawr Avenue in Edgewater would be designated as an official Chicago landmark district under a proposal introduced to City Council today by Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Located along the 900 through 1100 blocks of West Bryn Mawr Avenue between Sheridan Road and Broadway, the Bryn Mawr Avenue District consists of 15 contributing buildings built between 1897 and 1928. Most contain ground floor commercial uses with one or two stories of residences above, many with Classical Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, Mediterranean Revival and Arts and Crafts architecture styles.
The district also includes three large apartment buildings, two of which are individually designated landmarks.
A landmark district designation would protect the exteriors of contributing buildings against significant alteration or demolition.
