And Hamilton Boardman, a multitalented leader widely admired for clearly and skillfully navigating new projects, will be the editor of N.D.S., leading day-to-day operations of that team.
Like Pete, Ham came to The Times in 2007 and quickly showed leadership ability, nimbleness and can-do energy. Ham has worked in many departments across the newsroom. And in every role, he built upon his track record of getting things done, no matter how many complexities were involved.
Transformation has been a theme of Ham's career. After the 2016 election, he was the digital deputy in Washington for nearly two years, a pivot point in its transition to digital-first. He also helped inaugurate The Times's London digital newsroom. And he's worked crossfunctionally around The Times, including leading the Newsroom Product desk, created in 2020 to collaborate with Product teams in the Engagement mission.
Ham's new role on N.D.S. is a homecoming of sorts. He was a founding member of the team when it was known as Digital Transition, and he has always made teaching colleagues, understanding new systems and creating better and more efficient workflows part of his mandate. Along the way, he oversaw the many web producers who put together our digital report, and he worked deeply to plan and coordinate coverage plans for how major news events would be displayed and featured on the home page.
"Over the years, I've seen Ham become the colleague you turn to when a project demands both sound judgment and sophisticated problem-solving," said Karron Skog. "He has an instinct for spotting broken or inefficient systems and inventing something better in their place. Time and again, he has anticipated what the newsroom needed next and then taken the initiative to design, test and socialize solutions that make our journalism stronger and our operations smoother."
Over the last year, N.D.S. has been deftly led by Eric Athas. Eric stepped into the interim role after Charo Henríquez took on a new position in the Washington bureau, and we are hugely appreciative of Eric's adept handling of many N.D.S. projects during this time.
Please join us in thanking Eric, and in congratulating Pete and Ham.
