Governor Newsom Signs California Unions' Anti-Monopoly Bill Aimed at Bringing Down Costs for Working People

The COMPETE Act Empowers the State to Go After Corporate Monopolies

(Sacramento, CA) - In a huge victory for working people and consumers, California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed Assembly Bill 1776 into law. His signature comes despite a massive corporate lobbying campaign against the bill.

"Thank you Governor Newsom for signing the COMPETE Act into law to protect workers and consumers. California now has a powerful new tool to go after Big Tech and the biggest corporate monopolies in America that have used their concentration of power to charge us all higher prices, lower wages and block workers from unionizing," said Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO and lead sponsor of AB 1776. "This bill gets us one step closer to building a more affordable economy for working people."

AB 1776 is co-sponsored by the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), the Teamsters, National Nurses United-California Nurses Association (NNU-CNA), Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and the Service Employees International Union California (SEIU California) and authored by Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, D-Davis.

Things are just too expensive. In an era of corporate mergers and consolidations, AB 1776 provides badly needed tools to the state to prevent any one corporation from having an unfair advantage in the marketplace, which drives up prices for working Californians already struggling to get by.
