Finite Carbon's Batchawana Bay Project Ranks in Top 20% of Assessed IFM Projects by MSCI

Finite Carbon is pleased to share that its Batchawana Bay Improved Forest Management (IFM) Project (ACR925) earned a BBB rating from MSCI Carbon Project Ratings and placed in the top 20% of IFM MSCI-assessed projects worldwide and as the top rated IFM project in Canada. The project also ranked in the top 10% for co-benefits, legal and ethical performance, and delivery risk, and in the top 20% for additionality. These results demonstrate the project's ability to create real climate benefits through its forest management work and reflect its strong carbon credit integrity profile.

Carbon credit buyers use MSCI Carbon Project Ratings to support due diligence and assess project quality. Built on MSCI's more than 20 years of experience in financial data analytics, the ratings are designed for investors, companies, traders, and developers seeking greater transparency and confidence in carbon markets. MSCI evaluates projects across six key areas: additionality, quantification, permanence, co-benefits, legal and ethical risk, and delivery risk. For the Batchawana Bay IFM Project, this independent assessment reinforces the project's quality, integrity, and ability to deliver measurable climate benefits and lasting value for forests, landowners, and local communities.

"We are proud to see the Batchawana Bay IFM Project recognized for its strengths in areas such as additionality, co-benefits, and risk management," said Dylan Jenkins, Vice President of Commercial Operations. "As buyers place greater emphasis on project quality and transparency, independent assessments such as MSCI Carbon Project Ratings build trust and accountability in the voluntary carbon market and provide useful insight into project quality and long-term value."

Key assessment results include:

  • Received a BBB rating and placed the project in the top 20% of ranked IFM projects.
  • Top 20% for additionality among ranked IFM projects, with the assessment indicating that the project's no-harvest approach represents a significant departure from common regional practice.
  • Top 10% for co-benefits among ranked IFM projects, with the assessment indicating the project is likely to deliver broad and high-value positive impacts on biodiversity.
  • Top 10% for legal and ethical performance among ranked IFM projects, with the assessment awarding a full business score and a very low country risk rating.
  • Top 10% for delivery risk among ranked IFM projects.

The MSCI assessment of the Batchawana Bay IFM Project shows strong results across key areas, including additionality, co-benefits, governance, and risk management. For buyers and investors seeking high-integrity climate solutions, these results offer independent recognition of the project's quality and value.

About the Project

The Batchawana Bay IFM Project spans nearly 60,000 acres of forestland in northern Ontario owned by Astina Forest AG. Located within the Lake Superior watershed and adjacent to provincial parks, conservation areas, and other protected lands, the property forms part of an ecologically significant landscape and contains a high proportion of fire-resistant deciduous species, contributing to long-term forest resilience. The project contributes to the protection of water resources through the conservation of forests, wetlands, and riparian areas that support water quality, erosion control, and hydrological stability.

Developed under ACR's IFM Canadian methodology, the project generates climate benefits through sustainable forest management while supporting local employment, biodiversity conservation, and long-term forest stewardship. Project activities improve wildlife connectivity and protect sensitive habitats, while also providing educational opportunities for students in environmental and forestry programs.
