The Detroit Office of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship is joining Trinity Films Entertainment Group as a partner on the Sixth Annual Detroit Black Film Festival, which will present an impressive lineup of 77 outstanding films from 30 countries, celebrating the creativity and talent of Black filmmakers and actors worldwide.
The film festival - in collaboration with The Ford Foundation, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, The Love Building and The Marlene Boll Theater (YMCA) - takes place from September 25, 2025 through September 28, 2025.
Detroit ACE is also partnering with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ)-Detroit Chapter on the premiere of "Beyond the Headlines: The NABJ Journey," a documentary about the founding of the National Association of Black Journalists, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
That NABJ film opens the 10 a.m. Saturday, September 27 in the General Motors Theatre at The Wright. Following the film, which explores NABJ's role in advocating for fair newsrooms and amplifying Black voices in journalism, Detroit NABJ and ACE will host a conversation with NABJ co-founder and Detroit native Joe Davidson following the film. Davidson resigned from The Washington Post this year after decades as a columnist and reporter, because of censorship. "The DBFF offers a diverse selection of compelling narratives, ranging from thought-provoking documentaries to engaging stories that honor Black experiences," said festival co-founder Marshalle Favors. "Audiences can look forward to breathtaking cinematography, powerful performances, and insightful discussions that will enhance the cinematic experience. Over just six years, the DBFF has become Michigan's premiere film festival, screening more 500 films directed, produced, written and created by Black filmmakers. This year's festival promises to be nothing short of incredible."
The three-day festival will feature screenings at The Wright, The Love and the Boll Theatre as well as talkbacks with some filmmakers. The festival will kick off with a Red-Carpet Opening Night Reception at The Wright. The festival will culminate with an Honors and Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday, September 28.
