Santa Clara County Reps Announce $12M in Federal Funding for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

San Jose, CA - Today, U.S. Representatives Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), Ro Khanna (CA-17), and Sam Liccardo (CA-16) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will distribute $12,000,000 to the City of San Jose to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

"Climate change is already negatively impacting California and our country, and it is vital that investments are made in environmentally-sustainable solutions, like EV infrastructure," said Reps. Panetta, Lofgren, Khanna, and Liccardo. "This important federal funding will make it easier for new and future EV drivers to save energy and reduce emissions with access to more charging stations. Even in a Republican-led Congress where we have some climate-change-denying colleagues, we will continue to follow sound science and support investments that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move America toward a more sustainable future."

"Meeting our climate goals will require widespread adoption of electric vehicles, and this public charging infrastructure will make this option more accessible and convenient for everyone," said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. "I want to thank Senator Padilla and the California Congressional Delegation for helping us create the clean, green cities we all want to live in."

The project, known as the Regional Santa Clara County Public Charging Infrastructure Project, aims to install 237 EV charging ports across San Jose and neighboring cities within the Silicon Valley Clean Energy service area. In San Jose, 120 EV charging ports will be installed at 12 city-owned public libraries, community centers, and parks.

This funding comes from the FHWA's Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program (CFI Program), which supports the deployment and installation of EV charging infrastructure in urban and rural communities.

The FHWA funding was provided the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Reps. Lofgren, Khanna, and Panetta voted in favor of and former Rep. Anna Eshoo, who then represented the 16th Congressional District, also voted in favor of.
