The annual report provides a summary of the economic performance of U.S. marine fisheries and their important role in our nation's economy.

Report Overview

Fisheries Economics is an annual report that highlights the contributions of U.S. marine fisheries to our national economy. It supports productive and sustainable fisheries, one of NOAA Fisheries' core missions.

The 2023 report is the 18th volume in this annual series and focuses on economic impacts in 2023. It provides information on:

  • Commercial Fisherieseconomic impacts, landings, revenue, and price trends.
  • Recreational Fisherieseconomic impacts, marine angler expenditures, and catch and effort.
  • Fishing Communitiesindicators of coastal community engagement and reliance on fishing, and social and economic conditions in these communities.
  • Spotlight Topicsthat rotate each year. The 2023 report provides an overview of: 1) the economic, social, and cultural fishery benefits in U.S. Pacific Islands Territories and 2) oyster aquaculture in the United States.

2023 Economic Impacts

Economic impacts of U.S. fisheries in 2023. $319 billion in sales impacts generated nationally-a 4 percent decrease from 2022-with $145 billion in sales impacts generated by recreational fishing, and $173 billion in sales impacts generated by commercial fishing and the seafood industry. 2.1 million jobs supported nationally-a 6 percent decrease from 2022-with 0.7 million jobs supported by recreational fishing, and 1.4 million jobs supported by commercial fishing and the seafood industry.
