Washington, DC - The American Constitution Society today released the following statement in response to the Senate's confirmation of the first judicial nominee of Donald Trump's second term, and in anticipation of Senate Judiciary votes this week:
"Federal district and circuit courts have overwhelmingly issued rulings protecting the Constitution and the rule of law in the face of the President's relentless attacks on American democracy and government institutions. This has been true of judges from across the ideological spectrum and across the country, with the notable exception being the Supreme Court.
However, as the President continues to show his contempt for the judiciary, including by nominating his former personal attorney to the Third Circuit, the Senate must fully consider whether his nominees to the court believe that the courts are a coequal branch of government.
We have long stated that courts matter. This could not be truer than today when our country and its residents are facing increasing threats to their way of life and freedoms. Our laws, our rights, our very democracy's survival depends on the appointment of judges that have demonstrated they have the integrity and courage to make reasoned and independent decisions that follow the rule of law."
