Minister Fajon: today is a good day for Slovenian-Turkish business ties

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon concluded her visit to Ankara with the signing of the protocol of the 9th meeting of the Slovenian-Turkish Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation and the opening of the Slovenian-Turkish Business Forum. The numerous events and meetings held over the two days in the Turkish capital underscore the significant mutual interest in deepening economic cooperation.

"Today is a good day for Slovenian-Turkish economic relations. On one hand, we have signed the protocol of the 9th meeting of the Slovenian-Turkish Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation, which provides the foundation for further collaboration and will enhance economic ties between our two countries. On the other hand, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the SPIRIT Slovenia Public Agency and KOSGEB, the Turkish Organisation for the Development of SMEs, promises to enhance trade cooperation between Turkish and Slovenian SMEs, contributing to their competitive edge in global markets. The Business Forum currently taking place in Ankara and attended by more than 60 Slovenian and Turkish companies presents opportunities for tangible cooperation agreements and the establishment of business connections," stated Minister Fajon at the conclusion of her visit.

During a meeting with the Turkish Minister of Trade, Ömer Bolat, both ministers agreed that the excellent economic cooperation between Slovenia and Türkiye could be further developed through joint ventures in third markets, including reconstruction projects in Ukraine, Syria, and African countries. The Port of Koper was highlighted as a significant asset for enhancing economic relations. Turkish companies are already involved in the Divača-Koper second rail track project, which will expand the Port's cargo capacity and improve its connectivity to Central Europe, as well as in the Karavanke tunnel project. Key sectors of interest for increased cooperation include information and communication technologies, agriculture, tourism, high-tech products and transport.

The 9th meeting of the Commission was co-chaired by Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, and Osman Aşkın Bak, Minister of Youth and Sports. This was the first such meeting hosted by Slovenia since November 2019, as previous engagements were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
