Jakarta, 17 October 2024: ERIA successfully held a hybrid-format workshop on road transport fleet renewal and the ASEAN Alternative Vehicle Technology Portal (A2VTP) at its Senayan office in Jakarta.

The workshop opened with remarks from Toru Furuichi, Chief Operating Officer of ERIA, who underscored the significance of the studies discussed. These studies focus on road transport fleet renewal strategies and the development of the ASEAN Vehicle Technology Portal, both of which align closely with the ASEAN Next Generation Vehicle Masterplan, a framework that ERIA is advancing in collaboration with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI).

Dr Ichsan Zulkarnaen, Assistant Deputy on Economic Competitiveness Improvement at Indonesia's Ministry of Economic Affairs, also addressed the workshop attendees. He endorsed the studies being conducted by ERIA and its working group of experts, highlighting how they support the Indonesian government's objective of boosting the competitiveness of the country's automotive industry. Dr Zulkarnaen expressed his hope that the study findings would contribute to achieving this goal.

Dr Alloysius Joko Purwanto, Energy Economist at ERIA and leader of the expert working group, outlined the workshop agenda and moderated the discussions. He reiterated the importance of these studies in the context of the ongoing masterplan for next-generation vehicles.

Dr Adhika Widyaparaga from Universitas Gadjah Mada's Centre for Energy Studies presented preliminary findings from the study on road transport fleet renewal strategies in Indonesia. The research, which encompasses technical, economic, and regulatory dimensions, seeks to identify the most appropriate fleet renewal strategy for Indonesia and its potential economic impact. Early results indicate that the proposed strategy could reduce energy consumption and emissions while stimulating economic growth.

The following session featured a presentation on the ASEAN Alternative Vehicle Technology Portal (A2VTP) and its future outlook, delivered by Prof. Tri Tjahjono from Universitas Indonesia. The A2VTP project aims to establish a comprehensive database of vehicle stocks and market shares within ASEAN and monitor the growth of alternative vehicles across the region. Data has already been gathered from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Prof. Tjahjono and his team shared projections for alternative vehicle adoption based on the collected data and introduced the A2VTP platform, which is still under development.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Dr Purwanto, who expressed gratitude to the working group experts for their contributions and for the engaging discussions. He outlined the next steps for both the fleet renewal study and the A2VTP project and shared optimism that concrete results would be achieved in the coming months.
