Hoover Workshop on Space Safety & Sustainability

The Hoover Technology Accelerator's Leadership for Responsible Space Policy initiative held a workshop on Space Safety & Sustainability in Washington, D.C. recently. Led by Prof. Simone D'Amico, with the assistance of several Stanford Aero/Astro students, the workshop brought together top leaders from government, industry, and academia to address pressing challenges in space safety and propose actionable solutions for lawmakers.

Despite the complexities of the topic, participants reached a clear consensus on several key actions for both policy and technology enhancement. These include improving data quality and sharing obligations; fostering collaboration through a centralized platform for space traffic management; ensuring persistent custody and coverage of space objects, and emphasizing the need for close coordination on space safety issues at both national and international levels.

The discussions at the workshop were informed by an initial study of past and present practices in space safety and sustainability published by Prof. D'Amico and his team, and will shape technology and policy recommendations to be included in an upcoming comprehensive report on the topic.
