New Hampshire Remembers Lives Lost to the Drug Crisis

CONCORD, N.H. - Governor Kelly Ayotte's Office, the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and the New Hampshire Senate displayed black balloons at the State House today in recognition of Black Balloon Day, a National Day of Remembrance honoring those who have lost their lives to drug overdoses and standing in solidarity with the families and communities impacted by the drug crisis.

While Black Balloon Day is observed every March 6, New Hampshire leaders are joining together in remembrance ahead of today's House and Senate sessions.

"Today, we remember those we have lost and stand with the families and communities affected by this crisis," said Governor Kelly Ayotte. "In New Hampshire, we'll continue working to strengthen prevention, expand treatment and recovery services, and support the frontline workers and organizations who are providing a hand up to our neighbors struggling with substance use disorder."

"On Black Balloon Day, we remember those lost to overdose and honor the families affected," said Senate President Sharon Carson. "Today is a reminder to support prevention, expand access to treatment, and stand with those battling addiction. We must continue working together to end this crisis."

"Black Balloon Day is a solemn reminder of the lives lost to the opioid crisis and the families and communities forever changed by addiction," said Speaker of the House Sherm Packard. "Many of us know someone who has struggled with substance use disorder or have felt the pain of losing someone far too soon. Today, we remember them, stand with those in recovery, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts across New Hampshire."

New Hampshire continues to take steps to combat substance use disorder and support those impacted by the drug crisis. The State has fully funded community mental health centers, continues to support and expand the Recovery Friendly Workplace initiative, and strengthened the Doorways program, which provides rapid access to treatment, recovery support, and services for Granite Staters struggling with substance use disorder.
