Vogel Announces Seneca Valley School District Youth Agriculture Project

HARRISBURG - Sen. Elder Vogel, Jr. (R-47) today announced the awarding of a state grant to teach Seneca Valley School District students about the opportunities available in Pennsylvania's $132.5 billion agriculture industry.

Vogel, who chairs the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, said the district will receive $7,500 in funding from the Ag and Youth Grant Program to support its Living Laboratory and School Garden at Haine Middle School.

The project includes an aquaponics system and hands-on activities focused on the study of ecological principles, agriculture, life cycles and nutrient cycles.

The funding was included in the 2024-25 state budget approved by the General Assembly.

"Agriculture is deeply embedded in the history of our region, but the future of farming requires that we prepare the next generation to step in and keep the tradition going," Vogel said. "I commend everyone involved in the Seneca Valley School District Living Laboratory and School Garden and I'm happy to announce this state support."

Ag and Youth grants provide direct funding of up to $7,500 and matching grants of up to $25,000 to support projects, programs and equipment purchases by youth-run organizations, and those with programs that benefit youth or promote agriculture, community leadership, vocational training and peer networking.

The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
