Animal Shelter to offer free pet adoptions on Aug. 23
The Mesquite Animal Shelter is once again participating in the national Clear the Shelters campaign that promotes pet adoption and donations.
From 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, the Animal Shelter will host a special one-day adoption event, waiving all fees. Shelter pets available for adoption are sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped.
"Clear the Shelters is a great opportunity to connect pets in need with loving families," said Maria Martinez, Director of Neighborhood Services. "We've seen how impactful this event can be in helping animals find homes, and we're hopeful that this year will be just as successful. We truly hope to help find every animal in the shelter a new family on Aug. 23."
Besides the one-day event, the Mesquite Animal Shelter is offering a spin-the-wheel promotion for all available animals in August. After choosing the perfect pet, adopters can spin the wheel to see if the fee will be $40, $30, $20 or $10.

Clear the Shelters was started in 2015 by NBCUniversal Local and is now cohosted with Telemundo. The nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign will run this year for the entire month of August.
Across the country, Clear the Shelters has helped more than 1.2 million pets find new homes. Last year, more than 1,600 shelters and rescues placed more than 170,000 pets and raised more than $500,000.
Locally, the Mesquite Animal Shelter placed 171 dogs and cats in new homes last year during Clear the Shelters month.

Operating hours are 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The shelter is open from 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturday and is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
