As part of Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus) Awareness Week 2026 (only accessible on the DWAN), the Defence Team's Directorate for Gender Equality and Intersectional Analysis is hosting an online panel discussion focused on applying GBA Plus in practice.
The panel, titled "Options and Precision: Intersectional Analysis in Practice," will take place on Wednesday, May 6,from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The 90-minute interactive online event will feature expert speakers from across the Defence Team, who will share insights on integrating GBA Plus, intersectional analysis, or Women, Peace, and Security considerations in operations. They will discuss examples of best practices, explore responses to real-world challenges, and demonstrate how GBA Plus and other tools can be used to apply intersectional analysis in tactical decision-making.
Themes will include:

  • The role intersectional analysis plays in enhancing precision and effectiveness of decision-making in Defence operations and business practices.
  • The practical tools and strategies available to the Defence Team for further integrating intersectional perspectives into our work.
  • The lessons we have learned from past operations and initiatives and how we have evolved our approach to build on best practices.
  • Additional details on the event agenda and panelists will be shared on the intranet event page closer to the event.

What is GBA Plus?

GBA Plus is an analytical tool that helps Defence Team members understand how multiple identity factors-such as race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, language and family status-intersect to shape individual experiences. In a defence and security context, identity factors may also include occupation, classification, rank, and unit, as well as terms of employment and career success. Applying GBA Plus to identify risks, threats, and vulnerabilities strengthens operations and builds strong teams by improving our understanding of the human environment and supporting better outcomes.

Why does GBA Plus matter?

This year's GBA Plus Awareness Week emphasizes the practical value of intersectional analysis in supporting operations across the Defence Team. Applying GBA Plus regularly, routinely, and consistently across institutional and operational activities promotes equitable outcomes and enhances operational effectiveness, strengthens crisis response and enables inclusive, informed decision-making at all levels.
