The Michigan Supreme Court has reappointed the Honorable James M. Biernat, Jr. for an additional two-year term as Chief Judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit, Macomb County Probate, and 42nd District Courts. The Michigan Supreme Court has also appointed Judge Biernat to be the Chief Judge for the 38th District Court for the next two years. Chief Judge Biernat was appointed to the Bench in 2011 and elected as a Judge in 2012. He began serving as Chief Judge in 2015 upon the retirement of former Chief Judge John C. Foster. Judge Biernat has been reappointed as Chief Judge every two years since 2016.
During his tenure as Chief Judge, he has overseen massive court renovation projects which resulted in a movement of all Circuit and Probate Court operations to one convenient downtown location in the Circuit Court building. There has been the addition of a much-needed Sobriety Treatment Court as well as the addition of new judges to serve the County.
In 2024, Chief Judge Biernat led Court Administration in creating and implementing a Strategic Plan for the Courts. Furthermore, Chief Judge Biernat spearheaded the formation of the Court's Legal Self-Help Center. The Center has assisted in the continued effort of this Court to provide equal access to justice to all litigants.
Chief Judge Biernat stated, "It is my honor to once again be appointed Chief Judge of these Macomb County Courts. Although I am proud of all the Courts have accomplished during these past two years, I know we will continue to make progress in the administration of justice. I am thankful for my fellow judges and court staff who remain dedicated to the work we do here. It is because of their commitment to doing justice that we are able to uphold the law and honor the will of the people in Macomb County."
