NV Energy Foundation Grant Advances Workforce Training at Western Nevada College

Aug 18, 2026

In front of Western Nevada College's newly wrapped CDL trailer are WNC Vice President of Finance and Administration Coral Lopez, WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, NV Energy Community Relations Lead Madisyn Harlan, WNC Chief Advancement Officer and Foundation Executive Director Niki Gladys, WNC Continuing Education Manager Lauren Slemenda Moore, and WNC Chief HR Officer and Chief of Staff Melody Duley.

A $50,000 grant from NV Energy Foundation is helping Western Nevada College enhance training opportunities and improve the student experience for participants in its Commercial Driver's License (CDL) program offered through Continuing Education.

Secured through the Western Nevada College Foundation, the grant supports three major improvements designed to strengthen hands-on instruction and create a more comfortable and effective learning environment: construction of a protective shade structure for outdoor skills training, upgraded furnishings for a newly dedicated Continuing Education classroom and relocation of the college's CDL driving simulator into that learning space.

Together, these investments will expand access to resources and improve how students prepare for careers in one of Nevada's most in-demand industries.

Ryan Bellows, NV Energy vice president and general counsel and NV Energy Foundation board member, said financial gifts like this allow for direct support for workforce development initiatives across our region.

"At the NV Energy Foundation, we believe that investing in workforce development is one of the most meaningful ways we can support Nevada's future," Bellows said. "This grant reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for students to gain the skills, training and hands-on experience needed for successful careers in high-demand industries."

Western Nevada College President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe said the investment reflects the importance of supporting workforce education with environments that promote student success.

"This generous investment by NV Energy Foundation demonstrates a shared commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers that strengthen Nevada's workforce," President Dalpe said. "Commercial driving plays an essential role in our economy, and these improvements will directly enhance the learning experience by giving students greater access to technology, improved instructional spaces and more comfortable conditions for hands-on training. We are grateful for NV Energy Foundation's partnership and support of workforce development at Western Nevada College."

Niki Gladys, chief advancement officer and executive director of the Western Nevada College Foundation, said partnerships with employers and industry leaders help expand opportunities for students while strengthening Nevada's workforce.

"We are grateful to NV Energy Foundation for investing in our students and recognizing the important role workforce education plays in meeting the needs of our communities," Gladys said. "Support like this creates lasting opportunities for students while helping ensure employers have access to a skilled workforce for years to come."

The largest improvement will be the addition of a ramada-style shade structure in the lower parking lot where CDL students complete field instruction and skills training. Because classes operate year-round, students currently practice pre-trip inspections, vehicle operations and driving techniques without shelter from weather conditions.

With temperatures extremely warm in late spring and summer, the new structure will provide a safer and more comfortable environment that allows students to remain focused on learning.

The shelter has been purchased and is expected to be available for student use following engineering, approvals and construction later this year.

The grant also supports the creation of an enhanced Continuing Education classroom by providing updated furniture and relocating WNC's CDL simulator into a dedicated instructional space.

Previously housed in a shared classroom, the simulator's relocation will improve access for CDL students while protecting specialized equipment and creating a more effective learning environment for all programs using campus facilities.

Demand for commercial drivers continues to grow nationally and regionally, creating strong career opportunities for students entering the industry.

WNC's CDL program combines classroom instruction with practical field experience to ensure students develop critical skills in safety, vehicle operations, basic mechanics and commercial driving practices.

Continuing Education Manager Lauren Slemenda Moore said the grant will allow students to train more effectively while supporting long-term program growth.

"Our students work incredibly hard as they prepare for careers in commercial transportation, and this investment creates a learning environment that better supports their success," Slemenda Moore said. "From providing protection from the elements during field instruction to creating a dedicated classroom space and improving access to simulation technology, these enhancements will make a meaningful difference in how students learn and prepare for the workforce."

She added that investments in workforce education benefit both students and the broader community.

"When we strengthen training opportunities, we help students build confidence and gain the skills employers need," Slemenda Moore said. "That investment extends beyond the classroom and contributes to the long-term growth and prosperity of our region."

Through partnerships like this, Western Nevada College continues expanding opportunities for adult learners and providing practical, career-focused education that responds to workforce needs throughout Nevada.
