CAMO-RNO Veterans Treatment Court Celebrates Six Graduates

The Reno Municipal Court invites media to the 15th CAMO-RNO Veteran Treatment Court graduation on Tuesday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m. The CAMO-RNO (Court Assistance Military Offenders in Reno) is a problem-solving treatment court that serves Veterans and active-duty military personnel, charged with misdemeanor crimes.

Hon. Judge Shelly T. O'Neill will speak at the graduation to highlight the graduates' work and importance of the program, consisting of six new graduates, adding to the 97 Veterans and active-duty military personnel who have graduated since the program's inception in October 2018.

The CAMO-RNO Veterans Court was initially established through grant support from the U.S. Department of Justice, followed by an enhancement grant of $399,839 awarded in October 2020. Currently, CAMO-RNO is funded by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) via the Nevada Supreme Court, in addition to federal grant funding obtained in 2023 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

"Our Veterans have shown remarkable resilience and dedication throughout this program, and it's an honor to witness their growth as they work toward a brighter future," said Hon. Judge Shelly T. O'Neill. "I continue to be inspired by their commitment and am excited to see all they accomplish as they move forward in their journeys."

Reno Municipal CAMO-RNO is a specialized treatment court designed exclusively for Veterans facing misdemeanor charges. Prospective participants are evaluated by the CAMO-RNO team, and those who are accepted may qualify for diversion from prosecution. Upon successfully completing all program requirements, participants can have their charges dismissed and may be eligible to have their records sealed within the timeframe specified by NRS 176A.295 (2).

In 2017, the Nevada Legislature created new opportunities for Nevada Veterans and military members by enacting Nevada Revised Statute 176A.280. This law allows eligible participants to receive treatment, pursue diversion, and potentially have their records sealed.

Lawmakers also approved legislation permitting the placement of qualified defendants from other jurisdictions into the CAMO RNO program. This provision gives rural courts, which often have limited treatment resources, the ability to refer individuals to CAMO RNO Veterans Court to access programs focused on mental health and substance abuse.
