Bellarmine University mourns the passing of Leonard "Len" Spalding Jr. '59, a devoted alumnus and former trustee whose generosity and leadership helped shape Bellarmine's growth for decades. Spalding passed away on October 28, 2025, at age 90.
A proud member of the Bellarmine College Class of 1959, Len Spalding embodied the Bellarmine spirit throughout his life. After earning his Bellarmine bachelor's degree, and an MBA from Indiana University, he built a distinguished career in business. He is past president and chief executive officer of Chase Global Mutual Funds Corporation in New York City, now known as the J.P. Morgan Global Mutual Funds.
He remained deeply connected to his alma mater, serving for many years on the university's Board of Trustees, later earning Trustee Emeritus status in recognition of his lifetime of service. He and his wife, Susan, have been among the university's most loyal benefactors and are recognized as Bellarmine Visionaries for their transformative giving. In 2009, he was recognized as the university's Knight of Knights, a significant honor bestowed upon those who demonstrate exceptional support for Bellarmine. In 2017, Len and Susan received honorary doctoral degrees in recognition of their leadership and longtime support of the university.
Together, Len and Susan supported many of Bellarmine's most significant initiatives, including the construction of Bellarmine Centro, Bellarmine Athletics, the W. Fielding Rubel School of Business, Knights Helping Student Knights, the Bellarmine Fund, and the renovation of Pasteur Hall. Their impact can be seen and felt across campus in every classroom and gathering space that reflects their belief in Bellarmine's mission to educate students in mind, body, and spirit.
"Len's love for Bellarmine and his faith in its mission was evident in everything he did," said Dr. Susan M. Donovan, Bellarmine's president. "His leadership and generosity have left an enduring mark on this university and the thousands of students whose lives were enriched because of his support. He and Susan have strengthened the very foundation on which Bellarmine continues to build its future. Bellarmine University extends its deepest condolences to Susan, to the Spalding family, and to all who knew Len as a leader, mentor, and friend."
