Insurance Coverage By Kansas Congressional District 2024

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, this fact sheet andinteractive map detail health insurance coverage for Kansans in 2023by congressional district as well as by age group. The type of coverage available, demographic factors such as age and income, access to careand personal preferenceare some of the factors that may lead to differences in health insurance coverage between areas. These differencesmay indicatean opportunity for improvement. For example, if all congressional districts had the uninsured rate reported for children inthe 3rd District (3.7percent), there would be 13,681fewer uninsured children in Kansas.

Key Points

  • In 2023, there were 240,302 uninsured Kansans representing 8.4 percent of the population. The uninsured rate varied from a low of 5.7 percent in the 3rd Congressional District to a high of 10.3 percent in the 2nd District. The statewide uninsured rate was 8.4 percent, statistically unchanged from 2022 (8.6 percent).
  • There were 40,549 uninsured children in Kansas, a statewide rate of 5.6 percent. The 1st District (6.0 percent) and the 2nd District (7.0 percent) exceeded the statewide rate.
  • Three in 10 (31.7 percent) Kansans were covered by public insurance (including Medicare, Medicaid/CHIP, VA health care and other public) in 2023. Public coverage ranged from one-quarter (23.7 percent) of the population in the 3rd District to around a third in the other districts (31.2 percent in the 1st District, 37.7 percent in the 2nd District and 34.3 percent in the 4th District).
  • Six in 10 (60.0 percent) Kansans had private insurance (employment-based, military/TRICARE, direct-purchase and other private). While private coverage was 70.6 percent in the 3rd District, it ranged from 52.0 to 60.2 percent in the other districts.
