Eleven Northern Michigan University faculty members have been selected to receive 2026 Faculty Research Grants. The awards of $7,000 each support scholarly activities such as publications, the creation of artistic works, research projects, and manuscript development. The recipients and their project titles are:
Ben Doriot, Psychological Sciences: "Evaluating the Abuse Potential of Gabapentin in Combinations with Buprenorphine using Conditioned Place Preferences in Female Mice."
Emily Irwin, Psychological Sciences: "Effect of Acute R-S Ketamine and Chronic Fluoxetine Treatment on Behavior of Anxiety and Stress in Female Mice."
Corey Toegel, Psychological Sciences: "Expanding Capacity for Research on Self Control and Behavioral Disruption."
Caroline Krzakowski, English: "We Only Wanted to Forget: A Memoir of Family, War and Exile."
Robert Whalen, English: "George Herbert Cambridge Orator [II]."
Urvashi Uravashi, Chemistry: "Light assisted Desulfitative Photoredox Coupling by Earth abundant Iron (Fe)- Based Catalysts."
Katie Newton, Chemistry: "Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Tin (IV) Oxide Nanoparticles."
Liz Mandeville, Biology: "Evolutionary Genomics of Coregonus Species in the Laurentian Great Lakes."
Danny LeBert, Biology: "Hydrogen Peroxide Induced Changes in miRNA Expression during Wound Healing."
Kurt Galbreath, Biology: "Expedition to Western States: Field Collection and Student Training Supporting Biodiversity Research."
Heng Hsuan, Biology: "Translating Arabidopsis Iron Transporter Discovery to Improve Tomato Performance on Alkaline Soils."
All full-time NMU faculty are eligible to apply for the annual grant program. Successful proposed projects should either result in a tangible deliverable or substantial gain toward external funding opportunities for research or scholarly projects.
