Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Fitting Vehicles with Mandatory Speed Limiters Similar to Initiatives in European Union and Northern Ireland

08 Apr 2025In Parliament

Ms Joan Pereira asked the Minister for Transport whether the Ministry will consider requiring vehicles to be fitted with mandatory speed limiters similar to the recent initiative implemented in the European Union and Northern Ireland.

Reply by Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat:

1. The initiative implemented in the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland requires all newly registered vehicles to be equipped with an Intelligent Speed Assistance system. This is different from the speed limiters we require some heavy goods vehicles to have installed in Singapore.

2. The EU authorities are studying the effectiveness and reliability of these technologies as more of such systems are installed in new vehicles.

3. The Land Transport Authority will continue to monitor and evaluate the EU authorities' assessments, as part of the effort to improve road safety.
