Why Central New York is the Ultimate Launchpad for Drone & Robotics Startups

Central New York has spent more than a decade building a concentrated ecosystem for drone, robotics, and autonomous systems companies.

With the infrastructure and talent pipeline in place, the cohorts that come through GENIUS NY become part of the hub for drone and robotics innovation.

Investments in Purpose-Built Infrastructure

Central New York is home to the New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport, one of seven FAA-designated UAS test sites in the country, as well as NUAIR's 450 square mile beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) corridor between Rome and Syracuse. It's the largest BVLOS airspace in the Northeast.

Additionally, Micron's $100 billion semiconductor investment in the region is deepening the base of advanced manufacturing and engineering talent that drone and robotics startups hire from.

Finding Qualified Talent

There is a pipeline of skilled talent in CNY. It has helped GENIUS NY teams build out their teams with qualified workers.

Higher education institutions, such as Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, RIT, Clarkson and Cornell University, produce graduates in engineering and computer science. GENIUS NY founders have hired from both the local market and beyond. As Andrew Carter of Resilienx put it, "We've been successful in both recruiting out of Syracuse and drawing people to Syracuse."

International Founders Build in Central New York

GENIUS NY draws applicants from more than 50 countries. Some of those founders, after evaluating markets globally, are choosing Central New York as the place to build. Fotokite, headquartered in Zurich, expanded its U.S. operations in Syracuse after completing the program.

Sara Nozkova relocated Flox Intelligence from Stockholm to join Cohort 9. "I understood quickly that the market is here. In order to make it fast, I need to be here."

A Future in the Making

Uncrewed Aerial Systems was named a priority sector in Central New York more than a decade ago. Since then, the region has emerged as one of the most important centers for drone and unmanned systems, as well as advanced air mobility innovation, anywhere in the world.

Cohort 10 is how you become part of it.

Applications for GENIUS NY close May 31, 2026. Semi-finalists will be announced the week of June 19, 2026.
