'Sri Lanka National Anticipatory Action Roadmap 2026-2030' for Disaster Resilience Launched in the Presence of Defence Secretary

The official launch of the "Sri Lanka National Anticipatory Action Roadmap 2026-2030" was held today (04 June) at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate resilience through proactive action.

The Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), graced the event as the Chief Guest. During the ceremony, the first copy of the roadmap was formally presented to the Defence Secretary by Mr. Chathura Liyanarachchige, Director of Preparedness and Planning of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

Delivering the keynote address, the Defence Secretary highlighted the importance of institutionalizing the principle of "Early Warning, Early Action" to enable timely and effective responses to impending disasters. Referring to lessons learned from recent extreme weather events, he emphasized the need to utilize scientific forecasts to initiate protective measures and deploy resources before hazards occur, thereby minimizing risks to lives and livelihoods.

Developed under the guidance of Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda (Retd), Director General of the DMC, the roadmap provides a comprehensive framework to integrate scientific forecasting with preparedness and response mechanisms at community level.

The initiative received strong support from the World Food Programme (WFP), with Country Director and Representative Mr. Philip Ward underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing resilience to climate-related disasters and safeguarding food security.

The event brought together senior representatives from the United Nations, Ministry of Defence, Department of Irrigation, National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Vision Lanka, and several government and non-governmental organizations.
