On the National Prayer Breakfast:
"Thanks so much, what a great day to celebrate. Since 1953, Congress has met to pray. This goes back to my boyhood hero, President Eisenhower, when he started this tradition. A senator from Kansas invited him to pray with the nation, and we've continued that tradition on through today. In so many ways, this feels like communion for the nation. This is the day we pause, we get down on our knees and say, 'God, we failed you as a nation, but we want to do better, we want to be that bright, shining hill.' We want to make sure that we're indeed the nation of 'In God We Trust.'"
"I wake up every morning and pray that I would do justice, that I would love mercy, and walk humbly. I pray that I would be a message of hope. Of course, we're praying for our family, and protection, and God's guidance of our leaders. President Trump, his family, the Vice President, the judicial system, all the judges, we pray that they would be doing justice as well. That we could be 'One nation under God,' that's something else that President Eisenhower gave us-he added to the flag salute the portion where it says, 'One nation under God.' So I truly, truly hope this nation can remember our Judeo-Christian values that we were founded on, that we could always be, indeed, 'One nation under God.'"
On a possible government shutdown over DHS Funding:
"Well, I doubt we get this accomplished in the week and a half that's left. I'm reminded what the chaplain said today at the prayer breakfast, that we should take the long view of things. So, I would just remind my colleagues across the aisle that President Obama deported over 3 million people under the same structure, under the same rules, but the big difference is there were no sanctuary cities. And the sanctuary cities are the problem; they're helping criminals out, it creates the lawlessness. So, I really think the focus should be, what do we do with these sanctuary city issues that impede law enforcement from doing their job as well? At the end of the day, Republicans need to stand tall that indeed we're a country of law and order founded on Judeo-Christian values. So, we need to stand tall right now and make sure we get this right."
