Legislative Republicans push to secure federal tax credit for Maine students

Augusta - Today, Legislative Republican leadership sent a letter to Governor Mills urging her to support efforts to designate scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) in Maine. A state must opt in by designating SGOs; only then will charitable donations to them qualify for the new $1,700-per-individual federal tax credit created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

If SGOs are not designated, individuals will still be eligible for the federal tax credit by donating to SGOs in other states. The designation of SGOs in Maine will allow charitable contributions to flow into Maine schools. Legislative Republicans stand ready to work with the Governor to ensure this ambitious program can benefit Maine students.

The full letter to Governor Mills is attached to this press release.
