A standardised LEZ sticker for cars

A standardised LEZ sticker for cars

5.9.2025

Question for written answer E-003461/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Mohammed Chahim (S&D), Tiemo Wölken (S&D), Lara Wolters (S&D), Johan Danielsson (S&D)

To combat global warming and air pollution, several Member States, regions, and cities have established low emission zones (LEZs). In many cases, vehicles must display a sticker certifying their compliance with local emission laws to enter these zones[1]. However, travellers often face the challenge of obtaining multiple stickers or only discovering too late that a national or local LEZ sticker is required. Introducing a single, standardised sticker for all LEZs across the EU could greatly simplify travel for EU citizens and reduce the administrative burden.

  • 1.Does the Commission acknowledge that introducing a single, standardised LEZ sticker, valid across all the Member States, could significantly simplify travel within the EU, reduce the administrative burden for both EU citizens and the authorities, and enhance compliance with environmental regulations?
  • 2.What measures could the Commission envisage or undertake to develop a unified LEZ verification mechanism aimed at harmonising LEZ access requirements across the EU, improving the overall quality of life for EU citizens and upholding environmental standards?
  • 3.Is the Commission prepared to initiate a legislative or policy-driven process to create and implement a standardised EU-wide LEZ sticker, ensuring consistency and ease of use for all EU citizens?
